If it is a question of learning or finding out more
Varages' own museum, le Musée des Faïences, will tell
you the history and allow you to see displays of earthenware and
porcelain production in Varages over the last 300 years. During
the 1700s and 1800s, Master 'Faïenciers' Jean-Baptiste and
Joseph Niel, Gustave Pascal and his two sons, Emile and Joseph,
lived in our house, now known as La Maison du Faïencier.
The largest Museum of Prehistory in Europe is just 20 minutes
drive away in Quinson. A permanent exhibition there retraces a million
years of human activity in Haute-Provence. Videos, displays, models,
reconstructions all help to guide and entertain children and adults
alike.
The Citadel of Sisteron, just over an hour's drive away, also helps
to tell the history of the area going back to its protection of
Provence in 1209. Beautifully kept and restored, it is fascinating
place to walk around.
The Abbey of Le Thoronet, 35 minutes drive away, is one of the
three wonders of Cistercian architecture in Provence. Dating back
to 1160, the abbey has a stark beauty and serenity. It is possible
to attend services and concerts there, where you will experience
the exceptional acoustics. Other local abbeys include La Celle and
Silvacane.
